VERY EDIBLE GARDENS YEAR ONE.

                    The sad reality was when I saw local people working hard and I proved that they get less output!!  Though, I also realized too much living evidence of ecological disaster which was mostly bush burning and deforestation-thorough cutting down of trees with an aim of burning charcoal, selling firewood, logs, timbers which greatly horrified VEGU!! But I (Nyeromeister) kept around trying to give or guide them with a brief vision of what I think can be afforded and achieved by anyone and anybody so as to change from fighting the nature. Because, the consumptive lifestyle against trees will lead to the brink of completely destroying of the well being of the future and the generations shall be the victims. So VEGU knows that there is always other option rather than fighting nature. Because we knows that whoever will fight the nature, will lose the fight and nature will revenge against everyone because it does not discriminate and yet it is stronger than any one on this earth.

In 1^st Year.

         In first year, Very Edible Gardens Uganda is proposing to get on with establishment of the projects bellows;

-Orchard-a mult-fruit Orchard

-Medium Vegetable garden and crop husbandry (purposely for fund raising)

-Building temporary structures

- Apiary

-Aquaculture

WAY FORWARD!!

       Nyeromeister spent days taking the site analysis of Very Edible Gardens Uganda. Basing on the site analysis done, in this holidays we will be up with Zone:2 designing the plan work and then implementations will be coming very soon once we get next holidays as we are all pursuing our studies. VEGU had a little bit of change; we are getting up with Zone: 2 which will be an Orchard establishment.

As people are becoming more aware of biocides in their environment, they want the access to clean fruit. At VEGU, clean fruits are only organic fruits.

A non-clean fruit is that which is produced through the application of chemicals i.e. fertilizer, chemical insecticides or pesticides right from seedling up to the preservation time when ready in the market! And our clean/Organic fruit is that which is produced without any application of chemical and related substance right from the seedling up to the time it is being introduced to the market!! Instead of using chemicals, in VEGU nature will be playing the first priority and helped with Intelligent Pest Management-(IPM) that leads to producing an organic fruit. And we hope and believe that by years to come, clean fruits will be increasingly replacing chemicalised fruit which is presently more in the market.

Activities In hand Includes;

-Designing the plan work for zone 2 on a piece of papers.

-Fund raising through short term internship in different projects, work places, growing vegetables. It should be noted that these are to be carried in holidays.

-Short course teaching about an Orchard.

-Other activities i.e. maintenance, inspection etc.

Proposal for Very Edible Gardens Uganda.

             Very Edible Gardens Uganda-V.E.G.U is a “Permaculture” project in Gulu district found in Northern Uganda. It is yet at the grass root, being made up of three members of whom Mr.Nyeromeister Christopher who is the Permaculture Field Engineer and Mr.Mugarura Charles who is the Permaculture Field Designer are both done with the Permaculture Designing Course (PDC) taught by  Mrs. Rosemary Morrow. This course was also attended by land managers, agriculturists, and government workers from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Canada, Australia and the UK. Mrs. Morrow is also a renowned permaculture teacher, author and designer and has been working in the permaculture field for over 40 years. First and for most, Permaculture is the art and science of producing edible landscapes that mirrors the natural ecosystems in their diversity and production.

           -By aiming at introducing food growing techniques to local people, VEGU believe that through Permaculture ethics; care for people, care for earth and share the surplus, we will be caring for more than 1000 people in Uganda and worldwide.

           -We acquired interest in promoting environmental conservation and its Ecosystem. This is so because during the internship at Sabina Permaculture Project, we realized that it required us to look at our future lives and lifestyle from a different perspective.

           -At Sabina Permaculture Project, we discovered new ways on how Humans can create a no chemical-sustainable environment to live in which reduces the use of Fuel, Chemicals instead Enhances natural eco-system which to us was like strategies to people to adapt the challenging future; global warming, climate change and peak oil.

           -And lastly, VEGU is aiming at solving poverty in the communities; firstly through food security and in advance, teaching local people Income Generating Activities of different ways so as they can earn a living hence improving life.

          So to Very Edible Gardens Uganda, Permaculture seemed to be a life-long journey of change and growth and here we want to demonstrate it.

VERY EDIBLE GARDENS UGANDA GOING FOOD FOREST.

            With much desire and love VEGU has towards the community, we can’t wait to see what is missing and fail to help at our maximum. So we give people the right ideas or call it ways of going sustainable!

One of the fundamental activities that VEGU is up to is creating food forest which in turn having communities with good and plenty fruits in times to come. So this January, our main focus was on creating a sustainable food forest. Because we know that good quality and enough fruits are critical towards maintaining village food security. We think of food security and the availability of supply of this fruits year-round…..a supply that is diverse and plentiful enough to support a high standard of nutritional health. Improving Nutritional health is important because, without, communities lack one of the basic human needs which is critical to any further development they might choose to take.

         Mr.Nyero representing VEGU for first time visited families and has been working it out with the local people in his Village Luwek and did some fruit tree planting.

But we should know that local farmers here produce food first for subsistence-consumption by the family and only grow a surplus to sell at local markets. So we thought that by planting fruit trees, we shall increase the availability of local or regional supply of fruits which is obviously crucial to such farmers.

We want to improve both local and regional self-reliance in the supply of fruits. We see that this is very important where war and internal conflict has disrupted the availability of food for more than 25 years and where food growing production hasn’t been boosted by the Government so as to cope the fresh minded refugees who just left the Refugees Camp.

VEGU using local varieties of non-hybrid fruit trees so that the varieties can be conserve as it is already adapted to local conditions of climate and soils and they will remain available to farmers in the future.

The food forest campaign is to continue so as to teach and spread growing of fruit tree to the local communities and local people associated to have a better future for communities in the Gulu region and Northern Uganda as large!
