THE RISE or FALL MOMENT DEPENDING ON YOUR CHOICES :-)!!

Nyerology thinks the most difficult age for any man should be between 24 and 29 years, the pressure to be something, to be someone is so immense. When you look around you everyone seems to be doing something for themselves, people seem to be living a life you only dream of. You have applied for jobs and the results have been more disappointing than Besigye's shot at Presidency.
Sadly this is the age when most guys lose it, the age when if not careful one is consumed by alcohol or drugs, because the disappointments become too much and you find alternative ways to face reality.
Worse is when a few people you studied with have been lucky enough to land jobs, soon your circle of friends gets thinner – mostly they don’t even cut you out but you be real with yourself and cut yourself off. I mean what you will do when you are in a WhatsApp group of friends discussing about last week’s trip in Zanzibar and planning another road trip to Kigali while you are not sure of what your next meal would be? Most times you follow the conversation silently, all alone like a cross on the grave. Soon you realize this is no longer your kind of crowd because the more you keep around the more the pressure to be something takes a toll on you. You know when stories about house parties come up and you act deaf because you don’t know where an extra 5 guys would fit in your house. Have you ever sat in a group of people discussing the new iPhone on the market or how British Airways offers shit services and you can feel your heart whisper to you “ boss this is chest pain hour, can we just go and find a group that talks about boda boda(motorcyclists) “. But you sit there as these people are lost in their lifestyle conversations, you are like a secretary taking minutes in meeting. You are totally forgotten like one of a woman’s breasts during foreplay. Once in a while one of the friends will turn and ask if you need another drink and you wonder if you should just say No and head home, but head home to what? So you grudgingly drop in the “I will have just one last one “lie.
But after a few years of job hunting, you are now ready to take anything even if is to smell a rich man’s farts as long as it pays , so you end up as an office messenger in one blue chip company in town. To imagine that 3 years of studying and getting a degree is now reduced to picking and dropping off letters and if you are not doing that , you are being sent for cheap lunch by the employees when they are broke and they can’t order with hello food. This is when conversations about where people schooled start, you go silent for it’s no longer of any use to say you also reached University, it doesn’t matter – you have resorted to surviving.
Once in while you will bump into your now well to do classmates they would offer you lunch, but not even eating the meals at caffesserie will make you feel better about yourself, because in your mind you wish instead they would give you the 30k and you sort your meals for the next 5 days. As it is the norm you will have photos taken, and uploaded on Facebook, but always it’s your face that would look odd one out – not even the best filters can hide a face which has borne the city dust and survives on boiled beans.
The worst mistake you can do during this period is to try and date – there is nothing that a person going through such times can offer in terms of love. How are you going to do evening romantic walks when you are tired from walking delivering letters in offices around town? What are you going to tell your lady when she says she wants to go for Nile Gold Jazz Safari? That your financial religion doesn’t allow it or what? This is the age when you sit back and watch as the ladies you would want to date are dating or getting married to guys 10 years older than you. And you can’t blame them – it’s only that your life seems to be progressing slower than their goals in life. Most of the ladies you meet during this period, if you are lucky will be patient with you till you hit 28, and if by then your life is still in disarray like Chelsea’s performance in the English Premier League then my friend be prepared for a walk out.
But then this is the age when you learn a lot of about life, if you can hack through this stage of life the only hard moment in your life would be when you lose your parents- that’s if you are still lucky enough to have them. This stage teaches you a lot about perseverance, about appreciating the small wins you have each day, it teaches you something about friendship, love, career growth and personal responsibility .This is always your rise or fall moment depending on the choices you make. How you live your life in the 30’s is determined by how you handled your life in this phase.
That's my thought, you too can have yours.
 Thanks,
 Nyerology.

The extreme weather or lack thereof, around the
 globe has become relentless.
We have severe droughts in over 50% of world,

5th May-Permaculture Day!!
With great desire plus love Very Edible Gardens Uganda-VEGU has towards seeing communities with great and enough fruits, VEGU decided on the “Permaculture day” to go out and give a green offer which was planting a few fruit trees.
So 5th May being Permaculture Day, this is what VEGU did as a way of making their Permaculture day too more special and great. We suggested giving this day’s green offer to somebody and our dearest mum-Mrs.Sserwanga Ritah our former Kiwanga Home Administrator. And we were to hold it at Namugongo where she lives. After suggesting what to be done and to whom it should be offered, VEGU had to hear from her about the suggestion that we had came up with.
Our dearest mum was so excited with VEGU’s suggestion and welcomed VEGU while saying, “She was always waiting for such a day when his boys-the Permaculturist would share some permaculture implementation/design or ideas with her”.
Here VEGU go, 0n 5th early in the morning; Charles, Sharon, Brian, Beth gathered at Kiwanga where Nyeromeister bases. We kept around; shared times with her, planted trees that we went along with which we had referred to as a “Green Gift” as it is part of going food forest hence sustainable via adding fruit trees in our communities, had lunch with her too.
Details of the fruits;
We went along with four grafted fruit trees (two mangifera indica and two Citrus; Orange and Tangero) and the fifth one was a non-grafted-Guava (Psidium guajava).
-Mangifera indica (Edwards) is a grafted varieties and starts fruiting from 2⅟₂-3 years. It produces great fruits and is good for making juice.
-Citrus silensis includes Tangero and orange.
-Psidium guajava is local specie but bears amazing fruits. This native Guava don’t take long, 3-4 years is enough for a guava to start bearing fruits.

So VEGU shared the little they had with their lovely mum and the family at large; we had fun with the family and that is how VEGU celebrated the Permaculture Day-2013!!

Working Plan for Orchard Michi.

Permaculture Design.
Details about this working plan;
-This design is referred to be just a slice of zone: II because it’s is “one and a third acre” of the “three acre” proposed. It is organized around a gently sloped land and we are proposing to use only four swales.
-Four medium sized swales are to be installed to catch and soak in the rain water into the soil below the mound for fruit trees.
-Water for trees comes from the swales. Wells are to supply water also.
-Grafted trees are interspersed with non-grafted trees and bananas for greater succession.
-In the south-west and south-east, bananas are to be used on the boundaries.

Already Small Orchard.
Design Synopsis.
The already small Orchard was started by only one mango tree which planted by Arabu, who 45 years ago stayed here and went on migrating into other places. Now, more than 25 mango trees are in this small orchard.
Requirements or tools;
-Seedlings; 165 fruit trees, 125 banana suckers---495000#+250000#=745000#
-hoe
-Watering can
-machete
-organic compost
- Mulch
-gloves, and garden folk, pruning shears etc.

ORCHARD MICHI, A MULTI-FRUIT ORCHARD!!
Very Edible Gardens Uganda-VEGU is proposing an establishment of an Orchard and this is nothing other Orchard Michi-a Multi-Fruit Orchard.
Orchards are intensive areas of cultivation which is found in Zones:2 mostly. In Permaculture designs, an orchard can be considered a food forest because it produces plenty of fruits. So Orchard Michi will be our food forest. That is, it contains a diversity of trees hence many fruit. We are proposing it to be a mixed planted orchard to encourage predators which feed on pest and also to confuse pests which will be great if successfully done.
It should also be noted that an Orchard and poultry systems can go easily together and are the next greatest area of intensity after zone 1. The poultry are placed according to the best advantages for free ranging and shelter. Chickens should be within easy access to an orchard and or used as tractor in vegetable garden. Chicken and or pig tractor systems are the only really effective ways to grow organic Vegetables commercially.
N.B If Poultry and pigs are to be introduced; they should be introduced later [2years] after the fruit trees have grown. This is so to prevent damaging of trees.
These are steps how VEGU will raise and grow a multi-fruit orchard. Fruit trees grow in standard, semi-dwarf and dwarf varieties.
You should know that fruit trees grow in a range of shapes, sizes and varieties, but always produce sweet, juicy harvests. All fruit trees require some of the some basic growing conditions for growth and harvest, including sun, warmth, nutrition and water. This leads to easy companion planting among trees, up to a point. If you want a multi-fruit orchard, choose a large space and trees suitable to your area. We are basing on this factor to plant mangoes, citrus, chest nut, durian, ovacado, pawpaw, bananas, jack fruits, guavas etc adding on the already fruit trees that are on the ground.
N.B Apart from banana that will be planted in plenty, VEGU is aiming at planting at least ten-more of each of the fruit trees mentioned above for the benefits of Apiary, good pollination and plenty fruit production for both consumption and market.
As bushing burning is one of the commonest activities local people here practices during the dry season, VEGU turns this problem into solution. So here VEGU is to use a practical technique which is planting bananas onto the boundaries. This is very important because bananas have got big leaves and are ever green enough to solve this problem. This technique is not tiresome but can stop the over blazing fire from entering the Orchard from the south-east, west and south-west direction into this zone.
Requirements or tools needed for this work include seedlings, hoe, machete, organic compost, mulch, gloves, and garden folk, pruning shears.
For anybody out there who would wish to grow fruit trees, you can follow are steps if our factors suit your area too.
Instructions.
1.     Start all fruit tree seedlings in spring when the ground warms and thaws. These reduce shock to the new trees and makes digging easier. Plant 1 to 2 year old nursery seedling for best success.
2.     Select the trees according to the growing zone you are in. Trees such as apples, apricots, cherries and plums grows well in cold areas and peaches, nectarines, pears too fits well in such a cold area like the U.S.A. Here in Tropical areas i.e. Africa and other part of the world that are related to that of Africa, fruit trees such as mangoes, jack fruits, bananas, chest nut, durian, ovacado, pawpaw,  guavas etc and citrus trees like oranges, lemons, limes can grow happily due to suitability of the climate and weather towards the well being of these trees.
3.     Choosing the site for the orchard should be in the hands of the owner. Select a place where each tree will get full sun, good air, good site drainage, and at least each tree should be in 20 feet of space but this depends on the type of tree. But if you are to plant dwarf or semi-dwarf trees, let each tree own 10-15 ft of space in the row if planting in line. It should be noted that fruit trees cannot grow or produce in shade, standing water or crowded planting.
4.     Prepare the holes by tilling each hole 2ft width and 1.5ft depth per holes. N.B For bananas; 3ftwide and 2ft deep. And then turn 12-14inches [more for bananas] of organic compost into the soil for a moister, looser and more nutrious starting foundation. This foundation gives the trees the best resources and room for root growth and establishment, and provides long-term slow-release nutrition which makes plants happier.
5.     Plant each fruit tree seedling in a hole as deep and twice as wide as its root ball. Fill the holes slowly with amendment soil for best root-to-soil contact and in case of shortage of rain; water each tree with ⅟₂ 5litres of water. Prune the trees down to 30-36inches as this encourages new sprouting.
6.     Mulch the area around each tree with 2inches of organic mulch and put the trees on schedule of 2inches of water every week. It should be noted that the trees established, grows best with the consistent moisture and warmth.
7.     If there is a problem of infertile land, often fertilize the fruit trees with granular 10-10-10 fertilizer whenever they show up new growth. Liquid manure is the best fertilizer to be used here. Just sprinkle the fertilizer onto the ground in a circle around the trees, allowing 6inches of space between the fertilizer and trunks, and then turn the fertilizer into the top 4inches of soil. Water the area after feeding.
Tips and Warning.
Prune and fertilize fruit trees every year in late rainy season or winter to early spring. Pruning encourages better circulation and light exposure at the centers of the trees, while feedings give the trees the resources they require for growth and fruit production. Give trees new compost amendments throughout the season for continued soil quality.
